History is created through the stories we tell. But which stories are repeated and shared? How do stories change over time? When are they forgotten?

In Beyond Words: Stories of Our Time, students from schools across BC explore Indigenous ways of knowing and learning using the The First Peoples Principles of Learning. Through art-making, students voice what their words alone cannot.

Indigenous and non-Indigenous students alike reflect on what it means to be a young person in this moment in Canadian history. These collaborative projects have sparked meaningful dialogue surrounding social injustice, universal interconnectedness, and most importantly, truth and reconciliation.

About the First Peoples Principles of Learning

The British Columbian curriculum for K-12 has been revised and redesigned over the last few years to include more Indigenous content into student learning- in an attempt to go beyond post-colonial Canadian history. A focus has also been placed on inquiry-based learning, which values questions and exploring possibility for connections, above absolute answers. The First Peoples Principles of Learning was developed by the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC).
