Lisa Sars is a Vancouver-based dance artist working with elementary aged students. A student of Anne Green Gilbert, her teaching methodology for dance is holistic, nurturing collaborative connections, responsive dancers and creative problem solving. She teaches the 15 concepts of dance and developmental movement patterns (BrainDance) to enhance the students' kinaesthetic understanding of the world. She loves learning what makes students light up - a Katy Perry song or a glow-in-the-dark dance - and helping them unleash their inner dancer in front of hundreds of people. Lisa graduated from Maindance in 2007 and studied ballet for 9 years.

Lisa is a multi-faceted artist that is able to incorporate dance, choreography, and story theatre through inquiry and play-based explorations. We enjoyed Lisa's time at our school in the capacity of an ArtStarts artist. I highly recommend her to be hired for other ArtStarts projects. Monika Sanft, Principal, Nootka Elementary
After three months of practicing the children were ready to participate in the dance and perform it to not only the entire student body but then again to their parents. The final production was wonderful! Her vision came true and was a masterpiece. A work of art! Teri Taylor, Teacher, Bayview Elementary

Project Examples

Circle Dance

This project is based on the ancient practice of circle dancing to nourish the community. Humans need connection to thrive, be healthy and happy. Dance is one the oldest known ways of bringing a community together. In this day and age ways of transforming emotions into feelings of joy, harmony and peace are key. Circle dances can either be brought ready made by the artist, co-created with the class or small groups of students. The dances may then be offered through performance.

For the Glow of it!

For the Glow of it! features the use of UV lights to create whimsical illusions on stage - all majestically choreographed, improvised, and performed by the students, with artistic support. Each student's voice is in included in the mix. From the initial brainstorm sessions to the rehearse + perform sessions on the stage, students work with the artist once a week for a total of 3 months. This project is quite stunning and can be offered to both primaries and intermediates.

The Living Room Project

The Living Room Project works with the songs of a musical powerhouse (eg: The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Owl City, or Katy Perry) to evoke a specific feeling amongst those involved. These feelings are them imbued into original dance sequences sourced from the students and the lyrics of the songs. The Living Room Project comes together in a fantastical school wide performance for parents, staff and community members.
