Gail Nyoka is a storyteller, playwright and writer. She has published books for children and young adults, and a collection of stories from the Ewe people of Ghana. Her stage plays have run in theatres in Cleveland, Montreal and Toronto. Gail’s storytelling encompasses both traditional and original works. Some of her original stories explore personal history where it intersects with the famous and not so famous. Gail’s performances have taken her to venues in Canada, Britain and the US.

Purpose: Spoken language skills and expression, thinking, personal awareness and responsibility are enhanced through this workshop. Students are encouraged to think about the components of a story, become its characters, and to consider various points of view. They are invited into deep listening of each other’s questions and viewpoints. Step inside a myth or fairy tale. Open the door to its wonders and insights. The value of myth: it helps students to examine and understand the place where they stand. From this place of questioning and questing, choices can be made. Here they find solutions…and magic.

Language development through storytelling

School Year: 24-25

Aim of the program: to encourage storytelling as an expression of identity and ‘voice’ for the stories of students. With storytelling, children learn that language is more than simply words, more than day to day communication. They learn how to conquer language and exercise their imaginations, giving them the skills to think for themselves. Oral storytelling develops memory, confidence in speaking, and independence in thinking.
