Bea Martin

Discipline: Visual Arts
Homebase: Richmond, BC
Regions Available: Lower Mainland
Languages: English, Spanish

I am a character animator, certified medical illustrator (CMI), nature journal educator, and Fulbright Scholar with a medical background. With curiosity and enthusiasm, my goal is to craft entertaining, inspiring, and educational stories, merging art with science in both digital and traditional media in a creative collaborative environment. I love supporting the creativity and artistic development in children through nature drawing program "Budding Artists" at the Richmond Nature Park, and my website Curiosity, Creativity and Beyond (developed thanks to a Small Neighborhood Grant by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives). You can also sit at a picnic table I painted, depicting 5 birds of the lower Mainland and their nests, at the park next to the Gulf Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. And I also make (and eat) my own bread!

In this highly interactive workshop, students will learn fun and interesting facts of a specific animal or plant, and will learn how to draw it using pictures, words, and numbers. Each session will focus on one specific animal/plant, and the students will draw along the instructor, adding colour. At the end of each session, students will have a finished nature illustration, complete with labels, arrows, and text. These workshops are based on the drawing sessions I conducted via zoom during the pandemic, for the Richmond Nature Park, called “Introduction to Nature Illustration” . My goals are: - to provide a safe space to support creativity, curiosity, and artistic development of students - to help participants connect with nature - to promote scientific literacy - to build transferable skills - to build community Please know that I am available to visit several classes within a school.

Testimonials & Reviews

Bea was lovely! Cheerful, knowledgeable, talented and enthusiastic! Teacher, MyPita Conference October 2022
Thank you for picking our class to learn all these cool nature facts and shapes! My favourite part was using the paintbrushes and drawing the bees. One thing I learned was that bees are actually quite calm. I appreciate you teaching us all these things and inviting us to draw with you. I feel very lucky and I think everyone else does too. Student Grade 5/6, Grauer Elementary, Richmond BC
I really liked you teach us to draw the bees. I didn't know the bee has 6 legs and it has 3 eyes on the top! I really liked the water colour pencils. It was great! Student Grade 5/6, Grauer Elementary, Richmond BC
