Celebrating Maker Space at ArtStarts

On Saturday, October 5, we welcomed fifty-four young people and their families to explore explore the new exhibition at the ArtStarts Gallery! Maker Space at ArtStarts is an open studio designed just for young people and we were thrilled to welcome so many creative learners and their caregivers to our launch event.

The Maker movement is built on the idea that everyone is creative and that we need space and time to explore, create and collaborate so that we can turn ideas into reality. We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to kick off the exhibition than with a messy day of drawing, printmaking, photography, and more!

From 11am to 12pm, we hosted a special ArtStarts Explores activity with our in-house working artists Lily Cryan and Kay Slater. Participants were inspired by anything and everything you can make out of cardboard and yarn, with an intergalactic twist--all our activities were designed to put the space back in Maker Space! Our participants created a supernova, cardboard inventions, painted their own constellations, and dressed up an astronaut to be ready for lift-off.

Our superstar volunteer team was on deck to support young people as they explored design thinking by getting hands-on with materials. Everything in this open studio is designed to be reusable, breakable, hack-able, and reconfigured by young makers, and we were thrilled to welcome a crowd of future DIY artists into the space right until the Gallery closed at 4:30pm.

The only free Maker Space specifically built for young people and their families in Vancouver, this exhibition is safe for young makers of all ages AND our environment: everything is hands-on, low-waste, and reusable, with tools that everyone can use! Concerned about your computer skills or your young maker’s screen time? Don’t worry; this intergenerational space is also low-tech!

The ArtStarts Gallery is the only public gallery in Canada dedicated to fostering young people's creativity —that’s why we’re so excited to welcome you to our Maker Space, where children and youth can explore, build, and collaborate in the spirit of the DIY movement. Be sure to visit us from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:30pm; Explores is back for the first three Saturdays of each month from 11am - 12pm for more artist-led, process-based activities!
